A step forward in sustainable construction

In 2024, Colas companies The Miller Group and Standard General Edmonton became the first in Canada to produce Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for asphalt mixtures. EPDs provide a clear, comprehensive overview of a product’s environmental impact. Much like nutrition labels on food packaging, EPDs offer transparent, third-party-verified data about a product’s cradle-to-gate lifecycle impact. This includes the environmental footprint of materials and processes from resource extraction to the moment the product leaves the production facility.

EPDs are standardized according to ISO 14025:2006, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and credibility in the data presented. This makes them an invaluable resource for both construction decision-makers and manufacturers aiming to reduce their environmental impact.

    Why EPDs Matter

    For Decision-Makers

EPDs empower clients, contractors, and government agencies to make informed decisions about the environmental impacts of their construction projects. By comparing EPDs across products, stakeholders can choose materials that align with sustainability goals while ensuring quality and performance.

    For Manufacturers

EPDs encourage asphalt producers to benchmark their products and processes, driving continuous improvements in environmental performance. At Colas Canada, they play a crucial role in tracking and reducing our carbon footprint as part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.

    Driving Industry Change

As a leader in transportation infrastructure, Colas Canada is committed to advancing sustainable construction practices. The introduction of EPDs reflects our dedication to providing clients with innovative, transparent solutions that align with evolving environmental standards.

Thanks to the support of our partnerships with WAP Sustainability and the National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA), multiple Colas companies in Canada have published EPDs for their asphalt products. These EPDs are viewable on the NAPA website.
