What Is Full Depth Reclamation?

Full Depth Reclamation involves the complete pulverization of the existing asphalt pavement, along with a portion of the underlying materials, to create a uniform, high-quality base for new pavement. Key steps in the process include:

    • Pulverizing the full thickness of the asphalt layer, along with a predetermined portion of the underlying materials
    • Blending the pulverized material to form a homogeneous and improved granular base for the new pavement
    • Reusing existing materials, reducing the need for new resources and minimizing environmental impact

    The Process

The quality of the existing materials determines the strength of the resulting base. In some cases, additional materials may be added to ensure structural integrity:

    • Virgin aggregate, recycled aggregate, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), or crushed concrete may be incorporated if the existing materials are not sufficient to support traffic loads.
    • The process completely removes cracks and deterioration in the asphalt, creating a new, smooth surface.
    • Once the FDR process is complete, a new pavement structure can be applied immediately, minimizing downtime.

FDR is especially effective when combined with corrective work to address drainage and subgrade deficiencies, ensuring a stable foundation for the new roadway.

    Why Choose Full Depth Reclamation?

FDR offers numerous advantages that make it a preferred choice for pavement rehabilitation:

    • Cost-Effective: FDR provides a budget-friendly alternative to full road reconstruction, reducing material and labor costs
    • Sustainability: The recycling of existing materials minimizes waste and reduces the need for virgin resources, making FDR an environmentally responsible option
    • Energy-Efficient: FDR reduces energy consumption by eliminating the need for new materials and transport, lowering the overall environmental footprint
    • Versatile and Flexible: FDR machines are highly maneuverable, allowing for effective processing of various road geometries, including in urban environments
    • Quick and Efficient: The process is fast, with minimal disruption to traffic, allowing for quicker project completion compared to traditional methods
